Government forces fired a bullet in Shaheena’s left leg at her home in Wanihama area of Beerwah in central Kashmir's Budgam district, around noon of April 9 when Srinagar parliamentary constituency went to polls. Shaheena ran out of her house when she heard shrieks and the sound of windowpanes of her house being smashed by forces. “When our windows started breaking, and I heard expletives, I started shivering. I feared they (forces) might come in. I feared for my life and honor. It was just two of us, girls, at home. I ran out of the house without a thought.” “As soon as I crossed the door and stepped on the verandah, I fell down and my leg pained excruciatingly. I screamed when I saw blood gushing out of my leg. Then neighbors came and I do not remember what happened then.” Shaheena's father Ghulam Ahmad Parra says his daughter helped him to run the household by earning few bucks from her embroidery work. "She has been restricted to her bed since the day she took a hit," says Parra. "Now, my hopes are pinned on her third surgery scheduled after Eid-ul-Fitr." Doctors have fixed Shaheena's leg with screws and rods for now. They say that her left distal thigh bone has been broken to pieces. “There is a compound fracture plus there is a bullet wound. It is a long journey to recovery for the girl,” said a doctor. Eldest of seven siblings, Shaheena says poverty has limited her family’s avenues. Her father earns few thousand rupees a month. “How can I support my seven children and also funfd the treatment of my daughter?” asked Parra.
